Update building the Centre of Pharmaceutical Teaching and Educational Research
Last summer I have introduced you to our Centre of Pharmaceutical Teaching and Educational Research and explained how we would start building this local center to better support our teachers and further improve the quality of our education. Although not yet clearly visible within the organization, a lot has happened since then. Therefore, during this Teachers for Teachers meeting, I will give an update on our progress, share with you how we think COPTER’s aims can be captured in different dedicated teams, and what competencies we believe are needed for making these teams effective. After this update we will spend the rest of the meeting gathering your feedback on our plans for COPTER.

Let’s play: An escape room on ADME principles in a course on basic pharmacology (FA-CPS102)
On the 21st of February 2023, Freija ter Heegde and Anneke van Houwelingen will catch you up on the development of “game-based learning” within pharmacy education. The recently developed and implemented escape room on pharmacokinetics for CPS102 will be used as an example. The speakers will present the outcome of the implementation of this form of game-based learning and the effect it has on the motivation of the students and the effectiveness of using an escape room as a formative feedback moment.

Inclusive Education – Presentation Jeroen Janssen (FSW)
How do you ensure that all students feel welcome at the university? In the project ‘Developing an Inclusive Curriculum and Learning Environment’, we have developed tools for teachers and coordinators to assist them in achieving this. In this Teachers for Teachers, we will introduce you to two of these tools in an interactive manner: the Reflection Tool for Inclusive Curriculum and the Inclusive Teaching Toolbox. The reflection tool is designed as an instrument to initiate reflection and dialogue within a course team about the extent to which they are successful in creating an inclusive learning environment for students. Crowdsourcing ideas for the “leerlijn” Drug research
On behalf of the Leerlijnteam Drug research, Ed Moret will introduce the leerlijn and then ask you to form groups and to discuss which knowledge is needed for our students and in which phase. We will do this by discussing which visualisations should be understood by our students at the end of the bachelor. Think about Scatchard plot, Kaplan Meijer plot, Violin plot etc. And think which visualisations are needed for every BSc of pharmacy and which visualisations are needed for doing research in your division. We would like to form teams from the same Division to do this, so we hope to have sufficient attendance from all Divisions, teachers and researchers.
A laptop is handy; because “geeltjes” are not the best way to do this.

On 18 October, Frans Huigen and Mercedes Beltrán – Data Stewards at the faculty – will update you on privacy in research and education, and in research in teaching in learning (SoTL research). They will refresh your memory in general terms when it comes to privacy, and will specifically address current topics that you tackle daily. Are you for instance allowed to share student group pictures with your colleagues? And why can or can’t you?
We recognize a recent development in using student generated data for research purposes and eventually improving your education. Mercedes and Frans will take the time to answer your questions and problems as well, do not hesitate to ask!

Why, how, and what of ‘Community engaged learning’
Community Engaged Learning has been identified as an effective tool to prepare students for their potential role in the community and society. Via Community Engaged Learning students put their academic knowledge into practice and develop professional attitudes and skills. During this meeting Anneke will explain what community engaged learning is, why and how she implemented Community Engaged Learning in an elective course on pain, and she will share her experiences and observations on students’ learning. We will also explore how Community Engaged Learning can be implemented in other courses.

Post-COVID education: how do we get students back on track?
The COVID period has had an impact on education, teachers and students. Although the period seems to be over, the consequences are still being felt. Students no longer come to campus, feel mentally exhausted and have learning difficulties or deprivations.
The first results of my research project on interactions within the first-year tutoring program show (just like previous research) how important interaction and personal contact are in education. Not only for personal well-being, but also for learning (from and with each other) and creating a sense of community.. In this Docenten voor Docenten, I want to briefly reflect on the results of my research project and, based on that, discuss how we can get the “corona generation” back on track.

In september 2022 the new interdisciplinary bachelor program Zorg, Gezondheid en Samenleving will start. This bachelor program is a collaboration of the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Science. We focus on ambitious students with a broad interest for health and disease. The bachelor program will use innovative forms for teaching and assessment like programmatic assessment.

Do you want to test whether a possible solution to a problem that you experienced in your teaching works, try out a new teaching practice, or maybe better understand your students learning? If so, you’re should join us at the docenten-voor-docenten meeting of September 28. From 12-13h we will show you how to take a systematic, research-informed approach to these questions, according to the principles of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). This will not only stimulate you to work on these questions, and improve the learning of your students, but will also improve conversations with your colleagues and inspire you to think more deeply about teaching and learning.
In the ‘docenten-voor-docenten’ meeting of September 28, 12.00 – 13.00 you will be introduced to SoTL and take the very first step to thinking about a possible SoTL-project of your own.
If you want to continue working on your project and get more information about how the Roadmaps continues and take next steps in your own project(step 2 and 3), you can join us at a workshop on November 1, 13.30-16.30. USO project: “Giving Screencast Feedback”. Feedback plays a crucial role in the students’ learning process and is preferably effective and efficient. That makes providing effective feedback a complex task, where factors such as timing, quantity, focus, and method can have an impact. In the Academic Skills course (Ba-100), we have utilized screencasts to provide feedback on reports. The understanding of students and the experiences of both students and teachers have been investigated. During the Teachers for Teachers meeting, we want to share the results of the project with you, but mainly to inspire discussions about the effectiveness and efficiency of feedback in our own teaching practices.

The College of Pharmaceutical Science (CPS) is the three year international Bachelor’s study track of Pharmaceutical Sciences for students that are particularly interested in drug discovery and development. The Programme was launched in 2010 and has proven very successful and highly valued (Visitatie 2019). Yet, after 10 years it became important to evaluate the content, teaching philosophy and alignment of the Programme as a whole.
We, the CPS2021 team, recently finished this evaluation and we now would like to share the proposed adjustments with you. We hope to see many of you during this meeting and are looking forward to your feedback and suggestions.

Sustainability in pharmaceutical education
“Improving the world sustainably together” is a new strategy of Utrecht University. The goal is to eventually shape all education around the Sustainable Development Goals. What are those goals? Wat heeft duurzaamheid met farmacie te maken, en hoe kan je hier als docent mee aan de slag?
In deze Docenten voor Docentenbijeenkomst gaan we in de op de raakvlakken van de farmaceutische sector met het klimaat en de bewustwording van de problemen. We dagen je uit om na te denken over de rol van duurzaamheid in het Farmacie onderwijs en over mogelijkheden voor je eigen cursussen.

Binnen de bachelor farmacie is de leerlijn Drug Disposition ontwikkeld waar het farmacokinetiekonderwijs is ingebed. De basis hiervoor wordt in het eerste jaar in de cursus BaFa105 gelegd en in het tweede en derde studiejaar wordt hierop voortgebouwd in complexiteit van de farmacokinetiek. Hier doet zich echter wel een knelpunt voor doordat in de opbouw van het curriculum geen rekening is gehouden dat een van tevoren opgestelde volgorde van de onderwijsblokken door een deel van de studenten vanaf het tweede jaar niet zo wordt gevolgd, waardoor de bouwstenen van de leerlijn niet altijd goed op elkaar aansluiten. In deze DvD zal ik de huidige situatie en de knelpunten presenteren. Graag wil ik met jullie van gedachten wisselen hoe we flexibiliteit in het onderwijsprogramma kunnen brengen zodat de diverse onderdelen van de farmacokinetiek uiteindelijk wel als bouwstenen in elkaar vallen.

Internationalisering kan het hoger onderwijs veel brengen. Zo kunnen studenten en docenten kennis maken met meerdere culturele invalshoeken. Een internationale mix van studenten en docenten kan de kwaliteit van onderwijs verstevigen.
We zullen voorbeelden zien van internationalisering die ook voor Farmacie interessant, zinvol en haalbaar zijn.

Het Teaching & Learning Lab (TLL) is een active learning space is gecombineerd met een studio voor clips en live onlineonderwijs. Het TLL biedt docenten de mogelijkheid om te experimenteren en hun onderwijs te verbeteren. Bij campusonderwijs passen docenten en studenten de ruimtes volledig aan hun didactische wensen aan. In de studio nemen docenten kennisclips op, met ondersteuning door een cameraman. Daarnaast bevat de studio een virtual classroom voor live interactieve sessies waarin studenten bijna het gevoel hebben fysiek aanwezig te zijn.

De eerste online toetsen zijn afgenomen. Hoe zijn deze toetsen opgezet, waar moet je aan denken en wat zijn de ervaringen? Tijdens de Docenten voor Docenten zal Mirjam Hempenius vertellen hoe de online toetsen bij MA107 en MA303 zijn verlopen en kunnen ervaringen gedeeld worden.
31 maart 2020 (12.15 -13.00) wil Ed Moret (examencommissie School of Pharmacy) een discussie voeren over aanvulling, zodat volgend jaar iedere docent en student weet waar ze aan toe zijn.

Hoe komt dit? Omdat onze studenten de regels niet kennen. En dat komt omdat onze docenten de regels niet kennen. En dat komt omdat ze in de bachelor en master anders zijn en ook anders worden gecommuniceerd.

Verdienen studenten een plek bij het ontwikkelen van nieuwe vakken? Werkt dit voor ieder vak? Zouden ze ook een plek moeten krijgen bij het verwerken van de onderwijsevaluaties? Op basis van de ontwikkeling van de keuzecursus Digitale Farmaceutische Zorgverlening zullen ervaringen worden gedeeld vanuit docenten- en studentenperspectief.

Nieuwe brede klinische bachelor “Clinical sciences”: Renske van Gestel
In samenwerking met Diergeneeskunde en Geneeskunde wordt er een nieuwe brede klinische bachelor opgezet. Binnen deze bachelor zal er naast de meer ‘standaard’ klinische onderwerpen zoals pathologie ook aandacht zijn voor andere factoren die invloed hebben op de gezondheidszorg waarbij je kunt denken aan ethiek, technologie en de rol van de samenleving. Daarnaast is er veel aandacht voor persoonlijke vorming. Deze bachelor wordt momenteel ontwikkeld en de input van de Farmacie docenten wordt zeer gewaardeerd!

Hoe kunnen wij als opleiding de studenten stimuleren in hun academische ontwikkeling? – Karin Slot
Een docent moet zijn studenten eerst leren kennen om ze goed te kunnen begeleiden. Maar welke ontwikkeling doorlopen studenten in hun studie op het gebied van autonomie, kritisch denken, zelfinzicht, langetermijneffecten, motivatie, etc.? Waar is individuele ontwikkeling zichtbaar, en op welke gebieden kan een student nog meer vooruitgang boeken? In BA100 zijn we bezig met een toolontwikkeling die dit proces inzichtelijk maakt. Reflecteer en denk kritisch mee in de leefwereld van studenten: wat zijn hun ontwikkelingsmogelijkheden en valkuilen?

Tijdens docenten voor docenten willen we graag in kaart brengen wat onze doelstelling is bij de inzages en op welke manieren de inzages georganiseerd worden. Ga je in op inhoudelijke vragen of niet, gebruik je wel of geen antwoordformulier enz. De doelstelling van deze bijeenkomst is om te kijken of we een ideale procedure kunnen beschrijven en hoe we het leuk kunnen maken/houden voor zowel docenten als studenten.

Waarom is het voor docenten en studenten belangrijk om overzicht te hebben over het curriculum? En hoe zorg je voor overzicht en geef je dit op een goede manier vorm? Tijdens deze docenten voor docenten zal aandacht worden besteed aan leerlijnen en worden besproken hoe je een leerlijn het beste kunt indelen. Ook zal worden gekeken wat de gevolgen zijn van een bepaald standpunt, studenten, docenten of beleidsmakers, voor de vormgeving van een leerlijn.

Effective activities that help close the gap between teaching and research.Nick Grindle – UCL Arena Centre for Research Based Education
Most teachers want their research to relate to their teaching, and vice versa. This meeting explores ways to make it happen and includes a presentation on how a ‘Meet the Researcher’ activity at University College London has helped students connect with researchers and their work. At UCL we found that the teachers adapted the activity in different ways and that these adaptations led to rich leaning outcomes. We concluded that students can engage meaningfully with researchers and with research publications, that it is especially helpful for new students, and that it has potential to be the backbone of a research-based curriculum.

Concept mapping– Irma Meijerman
In this ‘Docenten-voor-Docenten’ Irma Meijerman will share her experience with a workshop she attended at the ISSoTL conference about Concept Mapping. Concept mapping refers to a visual representation of key ideas or thoughts in a graphic or pictorial form. Concept mapping allows students to identify relationships between seemingly isolated concepts while developing a cohesive knowledge structure. In this DvD meeting examples of concept mapping to study anatomy, physiology and pharmacology at a nursing school will be shared. In addition the usefulness of concept mapping in our own curriculum will be discussed.

Subject: Capturing lectures: friend or foe?
ICT is niet meer weg te denken uit onze maatschappij. Dit geldt natuurlijk ook voor het onderwijs. Er zijn al langer mogelijkheden om hoorcolleges op te nemen. Wat zijn de voor- en nadelen van het opnemen van hoorcolleges? Maar ook hoe stimuleren we studenten (en docenten) om de opnames op de juiste manier te gebruiken?
De bijeenkomst werd geleid door Elly Langewis. Zij heeft jarenlange ervaring met ICT in het onderwijs bij Biologie.

Renske van Gestel – Het Bachelor Werkstuk in het nieuwe curriculum
Dirk Rijkers – Keuzecursus Molecuul en Geneesmiddelen (BA-111)
Tijdens de keuzecursus Molecuul en Geneesmiddelen¹ (FABA-111) wordt het proces van geneesmiddel-ontwikkeling vanuit chemisch perspectief benaderd. Het ontwerp, de chemische synthese, en vervolgens de activiteitsbepaling staan centraal en de studenten doorlopen deze drug design cycle aan de hand van een ester en een zelfbedacht protocol voor een amide. Didactisch stoelt deze cursus op elementen van ‘inquiry-based learning’, ‘research-based learning’, ‘peer teaching’, en ‘design-based research’. Daarnaast is in deze cursus een onderzoek gaande om honours-onderwijs te laten uitstralen naar regulier onderwijs.
